Arrive to Port Elizabeth. Take steering wheel of your rented 4 x 4 vehicle and depart from Port Elizabeth heading west through the Gamtoos Valley to the Baviaans Kloof wilderness area. Travel through the scenic Old Van Stadens Pass en route to Jeffreys Bay, surfing mecca of the world. Cool off in tranquil river pools of the Baviaans while keeping a look-out for Cape buffalo. We spend the night camping in the peaceful nature reserve.
Day 2
We make our way slowly up the winding Baviaans valley, crossing the river repeatedly on our way to the historic town of Graaff-Reinet, where we overnight in town in cosy Guest House.
Day 3
This day we visit the nearby Valley of Desolation, and head to the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock, where we overnight at the Camp.
Day 4
A long day ahead! We are up before the sparrows and head south-east for Fort Beaufort to enter the Double Drift game reserve. After viewing buffalo, wildebeest, rhino, giraffe, hartebeest and many other species in the densely populated Inyati Loop, we follow the meanderings of the Great Fish river, enjoying some of the most majestic sights our country has to offer. We finally cross the river (getting our wheels seriously wet!) and pass by one of the forts dating from the Frontier Wars of the 1800’s. We spend the night on the banks of the river at Kwanti’s camp.
Day 5
We carry our tubes up-river, stopping to examine San rock art, etched into the rock face many thousands of years ago. A gentle 40-minute ride along the river brings us back to the camp. There is also a cable ride that ends with a splash in the water, and later we search for hippo lower down the river. There is so much to do in this tranquil setting, that you may well choose to spend another day here.
Day 6
Grahamstown shares some of the Frontier War history with us, and then it is onwards to Addo Elephant National park for a close encounter with the gentle giants. Share in our intimate knowledge of the best-researched elephant group in the world. The tour ends when we return to Port Elizabeth, some 80 kilometres further. Return vehicle and fly to continue your travel in Southern Africa.
